North Battleford Firearm Incidents

On January 4, 2018 shortly after 5:00 a.m. North Battleford RCMP responded to a complaint of a firearm discharged multiple times near residences on the 1900 block of St. Laurent Street. Members observed that one of the residence windows had been broken. Initial investigation determined the apartment was vacant. No persons were injured as a result of this incident. The investigation is ongoing.

On January 5, 2018 shortly after midnight North Battleford RCMP responded to a complaint of a firearm discharged at a residence on the 1600 block of 107th Street, North Battleford.  Several rounds struck a door an window of the residence. No persons were injured as a result of this incident. This investigation continues.

Within minutes a second complaint was received outside a business on the 900 block of 101st Street. Investigation has determined a silver car was outside the business when a red van entered the area and a firearm was discharged. One adult male from the silver car was transported to hospital with what was described as a gunshot wound and his injuries were described to police as non-life threatening.  Further investigation revealed multiple rounds were also discharged towards the business and through a window. Fortunately, no one inside the business at the time of the incident was physically injured.

RCMP Members located the red van in the north east area of North Battleford. RCMP emergency equipment was activated to conduct a traffic stop.  The driver of the suspect vehicle struck the police vehicle and then fled the area. A pursuit of this vehicle was initiated as the van travelled through North Battleford and then south of Battleford on Highway #4.  The lone driver, an adult male, was arrested in a rural location south of Battleford.

Battlefords Detachment and RCMP Forensic Identification Section continue to investigate.  Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Over the past several days there have been multiple incidents involving firearms discharged in the Battlefords Detachment area. While these incidents are not all believed to be related, they are also not being considered random acts. We are asking people to remain vigilant while the investigations are ongoing.

Battlefords RCMP continues to address gang activity and crime in the community. This is being done through targeted enforcement efforts, partnering with community groups, intelligence gathering and regular patrols/calls for service. If members of the community are aware of any activity involving gangs or have questions or concerns, we encourage them to speak with the Detachment or anonymously through Crime Stoppers – the only way anyone will know you contacted Crime Stoppers is if you tell them.

The RCMP encourages anyone with information about these incidents to please contact the Battleford's RCMP at 306-446-1720 or call Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Fraudulent Emails and Phone Calls

Battleford’s RCMP would like let everyone know that there are fraudulent emails and phone calls that are occurring in the area, where people are seeking personal information and/or donations on behalf of different agencies including the RCMP.

Although it is the season of giving and many agencies do make contact with people for a genuine purpose there are fraudsters out there that are malicious and looking to take advantage of people and defraud them of their hard earned money.

It is suggested that if you receive a call for a donation to any agency that you request information on that agency and do your research before committing to any type of donation.

As well you should never give your personal information such as date of birth, social insurance number or other such information out over the phone or via email.  Never reply to these emails or open any attached documents.

If the person or persons claim they are from your financial institution and there are issues with you account, go and see your bank directly or call the number on the back of your bank card to discuss the situation.  It is very rare that a bank would ever contact you over email or via a phone call.  It is always safer if you contact them directly yourself.

Battleford’s RCMP would also like to remind you that we do not call looking for donations to programs nor to the RCMP.

Should you receive a phone call, email or letter from anyone requesting personal information please do your background checks and if in doubt call the local detachment to discuss the situation.

These types of frauds can see people lose significant amounts of money and even their life savings.  Often the perpetrators prey on the elderly even claiming to be relatives and requesting money to help them through a variety of situations or hard times.

If you suspect any type of fraud or suspicious activity, please do not hesitate to call the local RCMP Detachment.

We would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year.

If you require assistance, please contact the Battleford's RCMP at 306-446-1720 or in case of an emergency call 911.  You can also report crime anonymously to Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Dramatic Increase in STARS Lottery Scams – Unity, Saskatchewan

Over the holiday season, the Unity RCMP have noted a significant increase in the number of lottery scams reported to police. Most notably, were calls from Scammers claiming to represent STARS Air Ambulance and telling people that they have won new vehicles, as well as cash prizes ranging from $30,000.00 to $175,000.00.  Everyone dreams of winning a big lottery prize. Unfortunately Scammers are known to take advantage of this and will attempt to manipulate people by falsely claiming they have won an extravagant prize and asking them to send payment in order to claim their prize. To protect yourself, always keep these points in mind:

You will never be asked to send money to claim any lottery prize. If you are being asked to send a cheque, money order, or payment of any kind to claim your lottery prize, it is a scam. Hang up the phone or delete the email.
You can check with STARS directly to verify if you are a winner. You are able to check the official lottery winners list on their website or contact them to confirm if you have won a prize. Always use the official number and website, and not the ones a Scammer may provide. In Saskatchewan you can call 1-855-449-2444, or email info@stars.ca to see if you have actually won a prize, you can also visit http:// starslotterysaskatchewan.ca/  to check the list of official prize winners.
